The Cistercian abbey of St. Mary at Hulton, a daughter-house of Combermere Abbey in Cheshire, was founded by Henry de Audley for the souls of himself and his family. The site, in what was then a remote part of the county, is just over 2 miles east of Burslem in a valley beside the Trent not far from its source.
